Of Thee I Sing & Let ‘Em Eat Cake

Of Thee I Sing – a fictional lampoon through a 1930s presidential campaign by way of a beauty pageant, a marriage, and some corn muffins – and its sequel, Let ‘Em Eat Cake, a dystopian ultimatum plot hatched by a sore-loser president after failing re-election to either overturn the recent depression-era election or overturn the government – bring us an opportunity to revel in a timely critique of America’s presidential tradition with a healthy dose of humor along the way.

Both two-act musicals from the early 1930s are the yield of creativity between collaborative writers George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind and the Gershwin brothers (George and Ira as composer and librettist, respectively.) Though less familiar today, this set of short compositions fit firmly into an early 20th century American tradition of “Book Musicals.” Both premiered independently on Broadway but met with contrasting receptions. Of Thee I Sing was a hit, going on to multiple Broadway revivals and receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Let ‘Em Eat Cake perhaps cut too deep with its satirical edge to obtain such a high public profile.

While neither of the pieces are frequently performed today, some songs may be familiar (especially “Who Cares?” and “Love is Sweeping the Country.”) Odyssey Opera with Boston Modern Orchestra Project present a special opportunity to participate in the full sequel set, just in time for a very real election…

In 2005, composer-librettist Mark Adamo—fresh off his first opera, Little Women—freely adapted, for his second, Aristophanes’s Lysistrata, the comedy about the women of Athens and Sparta who, disgusted by a pointless war, barricade themselves in the Athenian treasury and swear a sanction on sex until their men make peace. “Freely” is the key word here: the composer “…cut all but three scenes of the play, created new male characters, changed the war, and invented a wrangling romance between Lysistrata and the Athenian leader Nico. The opera imagines a woman who, at first, fakes political convictions so as to wreak on her lover an emotional revenge: only later must she ask herself, to whom does she belong, herself or her people? And its score sends its melodies searching through a labyrinth of mirrors; no sooner is a theme sung by one character, given one meaning, than it is assumed by someone else and inflected with quite another. The libretto suggests, ‘Each of you will tell the truth; neither will agree.’ The score aims to make that suggestion an audible process.”

Of its celebrated 2005 premiere, Alex Ross, in The New Yorker, wrote “It’s shocking how deep this seemingly lighthearted opera goes.” Twenty years after that debut, Gil Rose conducts and the composer directs an internationally accomplished cast in Boston’s first-ever staging of Lysistrata, to be recorded for release on CD by Pentatone.

In October2021, we announced As Told By: History, Race, and Justice on the Opera Stage, the most extensive and ambitious presentation of opera by Black composers to ever take place in the US. Ulysses Kay’s Frederick Douglass is the second installment of five operas that depict vital figures of Black liberation and thought across 250 years of history.

Frederick Douglass, Ulysses Kay’s final opera and his second on themes of Black American equality, premiered in 1991. With a libretto from Kay’s frequent collaborator Donald Dorr, the opera depicts the abolitionist’s final years and his second marriage through Kay’s style of “enlightened modernism” which brings his lyrical instinct together with a contemporary angularity. As Dorr noted in the program note for the opera’s premiere, while their earlier opera Jubilee had been imbued with the spirit of Frederick Douglass, the team was excited to embrace the man himself: “The words of the great leader would be our companion, guide, challenge.”

They chose to set their semi-fictionalized story in the years following the Civil War, when Douglass’s image and reputation were challenged by rumors and criticism. Dorr summarized the central questions of the opera: “How much of Douglass’s fall was perpetrated by unseen hands? Frederick Douglass had won the war. Could he survive the peace?” Though Kay considered the work his magnum opus, it has not been performed in full since its premiere. BMOP is proud to return this work to the stage after nearly 35 years and to release the first commercial recording of the opera.

This is a Pay-What-You-Want event.

Ill and feverish, Boston-born writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe – his creativity and inspiration in the doldrums after his wife Virginia’s death two years prior – plans to sail to Baltimore on a “voyage of discovery.” But is a ship scheduled to depart?

Amidst shipboard phantoms, morbid melodrama, a hasty child marriage, grotesque masquerade partygoers, a profusion of alcohol, and a haunting voice singing Poe’s last complete poem, “Annabel Lee”, two things exist: Poe and his dubious literary executor, the mercurial Griswold.

A trial to contest madness, advised by fictional French detective Auguste Dupin, seemingly conjures Poe’s past, revealing a grisly auction of muses, his beloved Virginia’s funerary reawakening, and glittering visions of what lies beyond the grave.

Join the Odyssey for an excursion like no other from Pulitzer Prize-winning master of contemporary American opera, Dominick Argento.

This is a collaboration with Odyssey Opera.

The production of The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe received funding from OPERA America’s Next Stage program, supported by Gene Kaufman, Terry Eder-Kaufman, and New Vision for Opera.

Awakenings

By Tobias Picker

Saturday, February 25, 2023 | 7:30pm
Gil Rose, conductor
Jarrett Porter, Dr. Oliver Sacks

Thousands lived to sleep…it’s not a fairy tale, but the incredible true story of Dr. Oliver Sacks, a young neurologist faced with treating victims of a mysterious sleeping-sickness epidemic of the early 20th century, a phenomenon of history nearly forgotten. Awakenings visits Sacks’s journey of perseverance and compassion that brought his ‘frozen’ patients back to being – but not to the world they left behind. With our current trials, this distinct retelling of the possibility of new life is even more resonant today.

Join BMOP in partnership with Odyssey Opera for the East Coast premiere of Awakenings, a moving tale of hope, loss, and transformation.

Semi-staged opera in collaboration with Odyssey Opera

Sung in English

In 1950 Boston based Pulitzer Prize winning composer Norman Dello Joio premiered his first opera The Triumph of Saint Joan. Unhappy with the results he withdrew the work. Still fascinated with the subject he was commissioned by the NBC Television Opera Theatre to produce an original 75-minute opera for television. The resulting work in two acts, The Trial at Rouen, premiered on April 8, 1956, on NBC. In collaboration with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera’s performance marks the first time The Trial at Rouen will be performed off screen and on stage in front of a live audience. The most condensed of all the operas of our season, it focuses on the period of the imprisonment and trial of Joan. The concert will open with Dello Joio’s most popular work The Triumph of Saint Joan Symphony a purely orchestral work based on the material from his first Joan of Arc opera.

Heloise and Abelard

Sunday, January 29, 2012 | 4:00pm
The Memorial Church Harvard University

John Austin
John Austin Heloise and Abelard
Edward Jones, conductor

Libretto by Christine Froula

Heloise and Abelard is a new opera about the famous lovers of twelfth-century Paris. It tells the story of two brilliant, disciplined, courageous revolutionaries: an eloquent, visionary woman whose integrity and conviction would make her unusual even today, and a charismatic troubadour lyricist and church philosopher, cruelly punished for teaching that reason is a divine gift, not a threat to faith. The drama interweaves their passionate, turbulent love with profound spiritual questions and high-stakes theological and personal contests, such as Abelard’s battles with Bernard of Clairvaux and Abbot Suger’s confiscation of the ancient, wealthy convent of Argenteuil (where Heloise was educated) to fund the pioneering Gothic style of the Cathedral of St. Denis, burial place of the French kings. All the voices, singing and instrumental, interact as if in an extended dramatic madrigal of a lyric modernity that evokes the medieval period’s sculptural aesthetics.

Libretto by Robert Pinsky
Story by Robert Pinsky & Randy Weiner
Directed by Diane Paulus
Conducted by Gil Rose

When the eccentric patriarch Simon Powers downloads himself into The System, his entire house comes to life around his family and friends. A groundbreaking new production developed by the MIT Media Lab in partnership with the A.R.T., Death and the Powers explores what we leave behind for the world and our loved ones, using specially designed technology and an expressively animated stage, including a chorus of robots and a musical chandelier. Machover, called “America’s most wired composer” by the Los Angeles Times, distinctively blends technological and artistic finesse to create a score that is passionately inventive, yet filled with arching melodic lines. Death and the Powers, which receives its world premiere in Monaco in the fall of 2010, is supported by Futurum Association in Monaco, and will be presented in collaboration with Chicago Opera Theater, in association with Opera Boston.

Synopsis
After being left by her lover, Anatol, Vanessa has spent 20 years in her country house. She has kept the house shut up, with all of the mirrors covered. Her mother, the Old Baroness, will not speak to her, and her only companion is her niece, Erika. As the opera opens, they are preparing for the return of Anatol. He is sighted coming towards the house, and Vanessa sends everyone else away. As soon as he arrives at the door, she declares her love for him—then faints when she discovers that the man on the doorstep is not her long-awaited lover. He is, he explains to Erika, Anatol’s son. His father has died, and he has come to meet the woman whose name haunted his father and mother. Anatol, left alone with Erika, seduces her. A month later, Erika learns that he has been making advances to Vanessa. She confronts him, and he offers to marry her, but, offended by the flippancy with which he has proposed, and worried about Vanessa, she rejects him.

At the party where Vanessa and Anatol’s engagement is announced, Erika reveals to the Old Baroness that she is pregnant with Anatol’s child. In her distress she runs away from the house and causes herself to miscarry. A search party sent out by Vanessa brings Erika back.

Vanessa, still unaware of Anatol’s liaison with Erika, marries him, and they leave together. Erika, left alone in the house with her grandmother, who now will not speak to her, orders the mirrors covered again and the gates closed and locked, just as before.
