Join BMOP for a powerful evening of rhythm, resonance, and innovation in “Bang the Drum,” an orchestral celebration of percussion’s boundless energy and expressive range.

The program opens with the bright and playful percussion quartet STUDY No. 1 (2023) by one of today’s leading female artists, the Grammy Award-winning composer Jessie Montgomery.

Follow by the Boston premiere of Celestial Circus (2014) by Richard Danielpour, a showcase for three percussionists and a piano duo that blurs the lines between earthbound ritual and cosmic spectacle.

In honor of Gunther Schuller’s Centennial (1925–2015), BMOP presents his Grand Concerto for Percussion and Keyboards (2005), a virtuosic composition for eight percussionists, and keyboards — a fitting tribute to one of the 20th century’s most visionary musical minds.

This winter brings a trio of monodramas to fire the spirit. February 21, 2026, BMOP presents Mono, Mono, Mono. William Bolcom’s opera, Medusa, conveys her experience as the only mortal Gorgon. Ron Perera’s The White Whale is a gripping character study of Captain Ahab from Herman Melville’s novel, Moby-Dick. Carlisle Floyd’s rarely performed Flower and Hawk gives an intimate look at the wealthy and powerful Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Mid-March, BMOP collaborates with Odyssey Opera on its production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Last Savage at Huntington Avenue Theatre. The three act opera buffa’s eclectic score and unexpected libretto delightfully subvert convention through Mozartian comic tropes.

On June 21, 2026, BMOP programs an invigorating evening of new orchestral works, presenting the world premiere of Avner Dorman’s Cello Concerto Inner Fire, John Aylward’s potent History of the World, Paul Moravec’s Miami Variations, and Bernard Rogers, Symphony No.5 “Africa”.
